THRILLER PLANNING | Costume Design

THE ANTAGONIST [Harry Ames] :
Will be wearing a broken down suit. As he will wear black trousers and a white suit shirt in order to create a black and white mise-en-scene without actually using a black and white filter. As well as this, he will be wearing a black tie and braces to maintain a sense of formality and adulthood without the use of an adult actor. We will use a balaclava in the scene to add a motif in the piece.

MEMBER OF ANOTHER GROUP [Ben Ambrose] :
Will be wearing a casual outfit, most likely jeans and a tee/hoodie in order to connote a relation with society - this relationship is that he fits in as does the rest of his group, unlike Harry's character. Making them binary opposites. As well as this, it could reduce the amount of formality which again could represent the lack of power and integrity of the characters.

HOSTAGE [Joe Blaxall] :
Similar to Ben, Joe will be wearing a casual outfit, most likely jeans and a tee/hoodie in order to connote a relation with society - yet will have an accessory to symbolise how his dad is on the police force. This could act as an easter egg for the audience that could hint towards the rest of the film. Firthermore, his clothes will be dirty and possibly riooed to ephisise the situation that he is in. We will use fake blood mixed with something slightly thicker in order to make the scene more realistic for the audience. Using a thickening substance will ensure thast he have more control over where the blood goes.

THRILLER PLANNING | The Pitch

Here is a 25 word summary of the essence of our thriller film:

"Childhood feuds get out of hand, and it’s up to the British police to angle their way round and bring an end to this conflict."
Written by Ben Ambrose

THRILLER PLANNING | Plot Synopsis

100 word summary of the plot of our thriller:
“Teens, separated by ethnicity, belief and pure hate, take it over the edge this time, when one of the group members is held hostage by the opposition. This cold hearted British crime thriller introduces a police force who have to do what is right for the country yet a dilemma splits the opinion of one of them. One of the group leaders is the son of undercover Nick Penning and it’s up to him to extract his son from this mess before he’s radicalised. But he’s not the only one trying.”

THRILLER PLANNING | Select Actors

SELECT ACTORS

Harry Ames - The antagonist/Interrogator. Due to how the conflict is between teen groups and Harry Is a teen himself so we don’t need to worry about looking too old or too young. He wears a balaclava [motif] of which connotes his secrecy from the rest of his gang.

Ben Ambrose – A member of the victims group, attempting to save the leader from the hostage situation. Picked for the same reason as Harry. Ben was chosen due to the same reason as the two other actors were chosen yet he defies generic conventions of power as he is smaller than the other members and is left to lead his group.

Joe Blaxall – The leader of a rival group to [Harry}. The teen who is captured/protagonist. The audience will initially be against him yet will grow to like him throughout the film. His father is also in pursuit of him as he is on the police force – attempting to crack down on childhood violence. Joe is clearly taller which is a visual representation of the power he possesses over the rest of the group.

PRELIMINARY TASK | Allocated Roles and Project Planning

ALLOCATED ROLES AND PROJECT PLANNING

In the film, Ben was allocated an acting role. This was because he volunteered to act and felt that he could portray the character very well. The character is supposed to be, visually, inferior to the other and because of his size, Ben was able to clearly portray that idea. Joe Blaxall was cast to play the role of the other character. This was because the other character is, clearly, supposed to  more superior to the character Ben played, and Joe is a lot taller than Ben so the audience can clearly see that and understand our idea. This meant that we didn't have to keep playing around with the camera angle to make Joe's character look bigger than that of Ben's.
For the initial ideas, Ben and myself worked together and created a mind map that contained four, brief, ideas that we could use. We picked the best 2 and briefly developed them so that they could be made into a short film. From there we picked a plot that meant we could show off different camera angles/shot types and editing skills, and from that criteria we decided the plot of the film.
For the storyboard of the film, myself and Ben worked together. From the initial ideas we had our plot, and when creating a storyboard we made sure that we included a variety of shot types and camera angles. We did this using a list of shot types and camera angles that Ben had created throughout the making of the film. Although we didn't use every single one, we believe that we had a good enough variety to show off our filming ability. I was put in charge of the drawing and story boarding as I see my creativeness and skill in this area as a useful factor. This meant that the drawings on the storyboard were clearly portrayed and showed what the camera angle/shot type was and also showed what was going on in the scene which was particularly beneficial when filming. I was also in charge of the cinematography as a whole (when filming). This was because Ben was acting for the majority of the film and we used My camera, which meant we could get the best out of it due to how I understood how it worked better than the other crew members. However, we both decided what was going to happen in the shot etc before the shots took place.
